I have no idea why they changed this.  I mean, what's different here?  The broken head is centered, more shadows have been added, and there's rubble in the back.  The scene also starts unfocused and then focuses on the head while everything else is blurry. 

And... I still have no clue why they called for this retake.  The sad part is that nobody has seen this retake since 1997.  Seems like a lot of trouble to go to for nothing.  But there you go!
